Flinders University is developing a Sustainability Strategy which will enable a comprehensive and holistic approach to embedding sustainability principles across its core activities. A commitment to environmental sustainability and social justice are embedded as core values in the Flinders Strategic Plan 2012 - 2016.
Flinders is currently focussing on reducing carbon emissions from its Bedford Park campus by identifying and responding to energy efficiency opportunities and developing a sustainable transport action plan. Water efficiency opportunities around the campus are also being identified and acted on.
The School of the Environment teaches a range of cross-disciplinary programmes spanning environmental management, population studies and environmental health practice. Sustainability principles are also embedded and taught in diverse programmes across Flinders, including within the School of Social and Public Policy, the Flinders Business School, International Studies and Tourism.
Flinders is the lead partner in the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) and has a Water and Environment Research hub led by the School of Environment. Flinders also has strong research capability in aspects of social and economic sustainability – including the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity, and the Flinders Institute of Public Policy and Management.
